hello wall

small mini example (tool distributed with source code) to write a simple ifc-file, the building elements within this example are driven by basic geometric parameters and the ifc-export can be customized according to some options.

Summary

The HelloWall is a small application build to export valid ifc files, following the already agreed view definition "Coordination View" and a proposed view definition "Presentation View". The latest version includes the export of property sets (as part of the "Coordination View" and "Presentation View"), and the export of base quantities as part of the proposed "Quantity Take-off Addon View". The export can be configured by a range of shape parameters and options. The source code is provided so that developers can follow the algorithms used.

The sample application has been developed by Peter Bonsma, TNO Bouw en Onderground with help by Thomas Liebich and Nick Nisbet, AEC3 and has been dedicated to the MSG development work. Future updates may be made available directly at the TNO BOUW website, focusing on IFC development, http://www.ifcbrowser.com/

Example 1

Results

the following export files are generated by miniExample/Release/miniExample.exe (with settings according to the figure):
  • the IFC file according to the IFC EXPRESS schema and P21 encoding (i.e. STEP physical file) (1)
  • the ifcXML file according to the IFC XSD schema and XML document encoding (i.e. XML file)
Explanations

the sample file has the basic structure of any IFC file, complying with the "Coordination View"
  • see here for more information about IFC view definitions and the Coordination View

It includes:
  • a file header
  • the IfcProject with the context information (units used, representation context, precision, etc.)
  • the IFC project structure (hierarchical structure of IfcSite, IfcBuilding, IfcBuildingStorey)
  • the three elements, IfcWall(StandardCase), the IfcOpeningElement, and the IfcWindow, including
    • the relationships (wall and window contained in IfcBuildingStorey), opening voiding wall, window filling opening
    • the different shape representations (body and bounding box representation, additional wall axis representation)
  • it exports the IFC defined property sets for wall, opening, window and the base quantities, as defined in the "quantity take-off addon view"

  • file_description: indicates the view definition to which the IFC file complies (currently a proposed notation). Here it indicates: file is according to the Coordination View with additional elements according to the Quantity Take-off View.
  • file_name: information about the file name, creation time, creating user, creating user organization, name of the pre-processor (ifc toolbox), name of the application, name of the authorizing user

  • IfcProject needs to be included exactly once, it serves as the root element in an IFC exchange file for the coordination view
  • It has a compressed GUID (as many IFC elements), a link to an IfcOwnerHistory (that may have dummy data) and references to the units used in this file and to the geometric representation contexts for the shape representations used in this file.
  • IfcUnitAssignment is the list of globally defined units (apply to all measure values within this file), e.g. all length measures in the geometry are given as "mm", all plane angles as "degree"
  • IfcGeometricRepresentationContext is the 3D context with a precision factor (here 0.00001), the placement is always 0.,0.,0.

  • This example has a three level project structure, created by exactly one site, one building, and one building storey. The levels of site and building storey are optional levels.
  • IfcSite is given with global positioning coordinates, located at 24° 28' 0'' north, and 54° 25' 0'' west
  • local coordinate system of the site is positioned at the origin 0.,0.,0. with no rotation (no project offsets)
  • IfcBuilding and IfcBuildingStorey, both positioned relative to the IfcSite, and with zero offset and rotation.

  • the notation Pset_WallCommon indicates, that these properties are defined as part of the IFC specification

  • a set of base quantities is attached to the window, this is done by assigning an IfcElementQuantity using IfcRelDefinesByProperties to the window
  • the notation BaseQuantities indicates, that these quantities are defined as part of the IFC specification, base quantities also means, that the measure of measurement for the quantity is based on the real geometry of the element in the underlying BIM.
