summary agreement that element parts in element containers shall not be individually contained within the spatial structure.

Description

If an IfcElement is a part of another IfcElement through the relationship IfcRelAggregates, then it shall not be directly included in the spatial structure through the relationship IfcRelContainedInSpatialStructure.

Example:

  • An IfcCurtainWall (the container) has components, defined as IfcPlate and IfcMember (the parts). The parts are assigned to the container by the IfcRelAggregates relationship. The parts shall not be included in an IfcRelContainedInSpatialStructure relationship, that would associate them to the spatial structure, e.g. to an IfcBuildingStory. Only the container is required to have an IfcRelContainedInSpatialStructure relationship.

[added 27-02-2013]
Any IfcElement, that is not included in an aggregate structure through the relationship IfcRelAggregates, shall be assigned to the spatial structure through the relationship IfcRelContainedInSpatialStructure.
